The Right Reverend Stephen Sykes

Stephen Sykes, Bishop of Ely was the sixty-seventh Bishop of Ely, in a line stretching back to 1109.

Bishop Stephen was born in 1939 and studied at St John's College, Cambridge, and at Ripon Hall, Oxford. He was ordained a Deacon in 1964 and a Priest in 1965.

From 1974 to 1985 he was Van Mildert Professor of Divinity at Durham University, and a residentiary Canon of Durham Cathedral. From 1985 to 1990 he was Regius Professor of Divinity in the University of Cambridge, and an honorary Canon of Ely Cathedral.

He was consecrated a bishop in Southwark Cathedral on 2nd May, 1990, according to the Ordinal in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. He was enthroned at Ely on Saturday 5th May, 1990.

On 1 September 1999, Bishop Stephen's resignation as Bishop of Ely came into effect when he took up a new appointment as Principal of St John's College, Durham
