Diocesan Prayer Calendar

January—April 2005

St Augustine of Hippo, writing almost 1600 years ago, said: "First give yourself to God and then to the work God gives you to do."

As we work and pray through this first Diocesan Prayer Calendar of 2005 each day becomes an offering to God for the work of God both in the Diocese and beyond. It is an offering by those men and women who have given themselves for the work of God, with our prayers to support them in that work.

The use of the calendar transcends parish, deanery and archdeaconry boundaries to unite us all in the common purpose and vocation to proclaim Our Lord Jesus Christ in and through the work God has given us to do.

In it we move from recalling the Naming of Jesus on January 1 through Epiphany and Lent to Our Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection which we celebrate this year on March 27. In a matter of weeks we will live, work and pray the liturgical giving of God to us in Jesus and the Son doing the work God gave him to do. And we are called to do likewise all that we do in memory of Him.

Let us pray, then, with and for those who are seeking to do the work God has given them to do both in the Diocese and the worldwide Anglican Communion.

March 20 - 26 Holy Week

20 PALM SUNDAY

Palm Sunday is quite different from other Sundays for this day, over Christian rejoicing, there looms the reality of Christian grief - "Ride on, ride on in majesty, thy last and fiercest strife is nigh." Give thanks today for those whose faith enables them to rejoice, even in utmost adversity; but remember also before God those who do not have, or have no longer, that gift of faith. To pray for such as these may often simply be to "look from afar" with love. During this week, words from St John's Gospel: and prayer for those in conflict, for whom the "Way of the Cross" is no abstraction, that they may find the "Joy of Easter" no abstraction either.

Confirmation Kimbolton School

Give thanks for the Church in Jerusalem and The Middle East

21 Monday in Holy Week - Here is your King... We have no king but Caesar (John 19:14,15)

Christ's kingship - ironic recognition by Pilate, contemptuous rejection by the priests. Our age is no stranger to conflicts of loyalty; these have no easy "Christian" solutions, nor are they simply between a Christian and a non-Christian way. Christians are as much involved in the kingdoms of this world as others are. Remember before God those bearing Christian witness, with hard decisions how best witness may be borne and forget not those whose failures betray the proper claims of both kingdoms.

MEXICO - Bishop Sergio Carranza-Gomez

WESTERN MEXICO (USA)

22 Tuesday in Holy Week - Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews ...... was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek (John 19:19,20)

A kaleidoscope of nationalities, tribes, cultures, races and languages under subjection of the Roman power, a Roman peace and a Roman law the influence of which is still felt today, but the ultimate Roman sanction was always the use of force. The Cross and its multi-lingual title symbolic of so much, let it here be a reminder of the exercise, frustrations and failures of force to solve the friction of peoples. Remember before God those who are in conflict by race, colour, religion, language, culture or whatever else divides peoples; pray for the fulfilment of the Christian vision that "In Christ" there shall be a new Creation where conflict shall be no more.

MICHIGAN - Bishop Wendell Nathaniel Gibbs

WESTERN MICHIGAN (USA) - Bishop Robert R Gepert

23 Wednesday in Holy Week - Woman, behold your Son.. .Son, behold your mother (John 19:26-27)

Greatest loyalties and ecstasies, failures and betrayals are often found within family relationships. There are times, when the claims of Christ seem to override all else, but most of the time loyalty to Christ and to family are properly parallel vocations, not easy ones at that as many a clergy family will testify. Remember before God not just those where great swords of division bring conflict, but also those who suffer the unremitting pinpricks of heedlessness.

MILWAUKEE - Bishop Roger J White

24 Maundy Thursday - Judas who betrayed him (John 18:5)

I received from the Lord what I delivered also to you (1 Cor.11:23) "To betray" and "to deliver" translate the same Greek root. On this day Christians celebrate Sacramental unity with their Lord, yet about the Eucharist have been expressed the most bitter of Christian conflicts, it is as if "glory" and "shame" are become mirror images. Remember before God those with whom, even within the household of faith, there is variance, that conflict at the least might be restrained, and at the best enfolded by hands of peace, and offered on the self-same palms of prayer that receive the Lord.

Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, Reformation Martyr, 1556 (Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge)

25 Good Friday - It is Finished (John 19:30)

An end to suffering; the completion of God’s purpose. Both of these are encapsulated in that cry. To suffer, in body, mind or spirit, is a part of life but it is not given to all to find, in their troubles, either the purposes of God or the grace to bend their pains to His purposes. Remember before God those for whom suffering seems to have no end, has no point or meaning, or is part of the corruption of evil, and entering into the mystery of suffering be ready to be silent, even dumb.

26 Easter Eve - In the place where he was crucified there was a garden (John 19:41)

Anyone bereaved will have known the "time of no time when time stands still" between death and burial. Sometimes blankness, otherwise remembrances of joy and pain, guilt and love crowd in; tears come easy to the eyes for no apparent reason. Conflicts within need to find resolution, to be laid to rest as much as is a body. Remember before God those whose bereavements have still to find their rest, that they may find a garden, and He who they may not recognise to be the Gardener of their soul’s welfare.

Rural Dean: Revd Stephen Earl Easter Day

Lay Chairman: Mr John Abbott Church of Ireland Clogher

  1. Easter Day - On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark … (John 20:1)

Awake, sad heart, whom sorrow ever drowns;

Take up thine eyes which feed on earth;

Unfold thy forehead gathered into frowns;

Thy Saviour comes, and with him mirth;

Awake, awake!

And with a thankful heart His comforts take;

But thou dost still lament, and pine, and cry,

And feel his death, but not his victory.

Arise, sad heart, if thou dost not withstand,

Christ’s resurrection thine may be:

Do not by hanging down break from the hand

Which, as it riseth, raiseth thee:

Arise, arise!

And with his burial linen dry thine eyes.

Christ left his grave-clothes, that we might, when grief

Draws tears or blood, not want a handkerchief.
