AVEC RESOURCES
for people working and consulting in church and community AVEC RESOURCES
are pleased to announce three new publications which complete their list.
Consultancy, Ministry and - Mission: A handbook
practitioners and work consultants in Christian organisations
by George Lovell to be published by Burns and Oates in July 2000, 350 pp. £20.00
This teach yourself book will help people to get and to give qualitative nondirective consultancy support and assistance in relation to their vocation and work. Consultancy is a significant feature of the future. This book will help practitioners to provide consultancy help to each other in the work place and assist specialists to make services readily available to clergy and laity throughout the Church.
The value of consultancy is proven. Beyond any doubt it is a good investment: it helps practitioners with things that previously stumped them, it improves performance and morale of practitioners, churches and organisations out of all proportion to its costs in time and money. Yet little is written about this much needed and scarce resource. Consequently this is a timely book which makes consultancy far more accessible to practitioners, anyone engaged in appraisal schemes, those engaged in pastoral management such as bishops, and those who train people for ministry.
Meetings that Work: A practical guide to teamworking in groups
by Catherine Widdicombe, The Lutterworth Press, April 2000, £5.00
This is a republication for a wider constituency of Group Meetings that Work,
(1994, St Pauls). The original work was still in demand after it was sold out.
Meetings are inescapable features of modern life. Vital though they are, meetings
are too often experienced as deadening rather than life-giving. Meetings that
Work is written to help groups, teams and committees of all sorts to realise
increasingly more of their potential for promoting all round development and
enjoyment in and through meetings.
It is a 'how to' book, a manual and helpmate for those in meetings who wish to take everyone's contribution seriously and to make decisions together.
Meetings that Work treats each group and every meeting as unique, deals with all aspects of meetings: forming a committee, preparing for sessions, getting people to pool ideas, insights and expertise, dealing with problems, concluding meetings, action-taking after meetings. Throughout, attention is paid to the dynamics, and the practical and theoretical detail which make meetings work or prevent them doing so.

CAREM
Cambridge Resources Ministry
23 Newmarket Road, CAMBRIDGE. CB5 8EG Tel:(01223) 353393
For all with a Christian Vocation in Pastoral Care
Counselling
Vocational work, such as that of a minister or priest, is very demanding. At CAREM we know that the pressures on time, home life, health and spirit can be more than those in other professions.
Christians in ministry may face unrealistic expectations. Sometimes these are self-imposed, but often they come from congregations or, even, colleagues. Some assume that clergy are available at all times. Yet ministers need personal space and feel frustrated if they are unable to create it. Anxieties and low self-esteem may further inhibit them and the resulting tensions wear them down and can play havoc with family life. Burn out, a sense of failure or guilt, and loss of faith may result.
All too often there seems no-one to turn to who can provide independent, confidential support and understanding.
It can be particularly traumatic for single people who do not have the support of a partner and whose congregation may make additional demands.
For couples and families there are other issues such as poor communication, dual careers, financial concerns, threatening relationships outside the marriage and the isolation of clergy families.
CAREM wants to put CARE into Ministry and one way is through counselling for individuals, couples and families. But there is more; this is also a place for them to be fed and their spiritual journeys to be taken seriously. We understand the context in which ministry takes place.
CONFIDENTIAL
Consultation and Supervision
We do not want only to be involved when things have gone wrong but to promote and help maintain healthy patterns of work. Our experience has taught us that much needless pain could be prevented by the processes of supervision and consultation which are the norm in other caring professions. These not only prevent stress but also facilitate creative ministry by encouraging reflective practice.
Consultation provides opportunity for the discussion of difficult situations. lt takes place away from the scene and the personalities involved, where there is no vested interest. The consultant does not intrude or take away responsibility, but offers insights and objectivity, facilitating the emergence of the clarity and compassion needed for effective work. CAREM offers a consultation service in the field of pastoral care.
'Supervision' is not used in the controlling, managerial sense but describes a process which focuses on the reactions of a minister to the situations he/she faces. Relationships with others trigger responses within pastoral workers, especially if the circumstances resonate with the worker's own experience; eg bereavement, marital breakdown, painful memories of childhood. Supervision provides a forum in which personal agendas can be identified, separated and dealt with, freeing the pastoral worker and enabling them to plan how to respond appropriately to those they serve.
ECUMENICAL REFLECTIVE PRACTICE
Pastoral caring can be tough and adequate time is needed for reflection and planning. There are matters which always need to be borne in mind when dealing with fragile people seeking help and assistance, especially so if ministers are isolated, or if their own intimate and emotional needs are not being met. These include the maintenance of boundaries, the role of sexuality in relationships and issues related to power.
Learning from unassessed experience risks the reinforcement of bad habits but time set aside to examine mistakes rather than sweep them under the carpet can turn them into learning opportunities.
Reflection on personal issues may also be needed. Though they are now being addressed, problems of race, sexual harassment and gender issues still exist. CAREM is a safe place to explore strategies for dealing with these,
CAREM is for all denominations. Though much of this leaflet seems clergy-orientated, we equally value lay ministry and are available for everyone with a Christian vocation in pastoral care.
CAREM is independent of church structures. It is financed through donations and fees charged for services. These are kept to a minimum. For ministers and their families seeking counselling, we can advise how funding may be obtained through the Churches' Ministerial Counselling Service. In cases of hardship, contributions to fees can be made by the CAREM Trust, a Registered Charity (no 1059769).

The Ministry Bursary Award Scheme
Ecclesiastical Insurance Group,
Beaufort House, Brunswick Road, Gloucester GL1 1JZ
The Ecclesiastical Insurance Group's Bursary Scheme is open to those engaged in full time stipendiary ministry in a Christian Church, whether clerical or lay people, male or female.
The Awards aim to provide opportunities to pursue a work related line of enquiry or build on established foundations of study outside the pressures of a demanding ministry.
A. Requirements
- Applicants must normally have
completed at least 10 years full time stipendiary ministry in the Anglican
church, or one which is fully recognised as being within the mainstream of
Christian Churches. Particular consideration will be given to applicants who
have had extended service in their ministry.
- Applicants must have their Diocesan
or District permission in writing accompanied by an application. We shall
expect personal confirmation from their Bishop, Archdeacon (or the equivalent
to Bishop in non-episcopal churches) on the application together with his
comments on the course of action proposed and the applicant's suitability
for it.
- Award recipients must write a report on their use of the award and the benefits which have arisen from it. Reports should contain a minimum of 2000 words and a photograph, together with a 100-150 word Project Summary.
B. Judging
Entries for 2002 will be judged by the current judging panel, The Rt Revd Dr Donald Snelgrove, The Very Revd John Simpson, The Ven Brian Harris, and Mr Graham Doswell, Managing Director, Ecclesiastical Insurance Group.
The judges will be looking for particularly imaginative and worthwhile ideas which will help churches relate to the needs of modern society - ideas which will use Awards to help clergy or lay workers make an even greater contribution to their congregation and communities.
C. Entries Deadline
Entries for the year 2003 must be sent to:
Maggie Vinson, Ecclesiastical Insurance Group,
Beaufort House, Brunswick Road, Gloucester GL1 1JZ
to arrive by 30th September 2003.

TRUST FUNDS
(MTF) MISSION TRUST FUND CRITERIA
For further information: Please contact the Trust Fund Administrator,
Mr Alan Tuddenham, Board of Mission, Church House,
Great Smith Street, London SWl P 3NZ.
Tel: 020 7898 1467, Fax: 020 7898 1431
Email: alan.tuddenham@.c-of-e.org.uk
The Board of Mission administers modest Trust Funds creating opportunities to assist towards the cost of study projects. Applications are invited where the purpose of the study leave is to consider the mission of the church or particular mission issues.
Who may apply?
Primarily those who consider themselves members, ordained or lay, of the Church of England and those who belong to churches in membership of Churches Together in England. Ordinands, those planning sabbatical leave and voluntary organisations planning a project furthering the work of mission are also welcome to apply.
What level of grants are awarded?
Normally grants range from £100 to £400, with approximately
fifteen awards made each year.
Who decides?
The Administrator initially checks any applications against the criteria, those
which meet the requirements are then processed and offered to the Trust Fund
Committee for consideration. The Committee meets in November to decide on awards
for the coming year. As no awards are made retrospectively, some applications
may not fit the timetable, in such exceptional cases a decision by correspondence
between the Trust Fund Committee is possible.
Positive Criteria
- The grants must normally be for
the expenses of an individual. The Committee will seek to distinguish between
projects, which are solely for personal development, prefering those, which
would also benefit the Church as a whole.
- The Committee will thus be looking first and foremost for evidence that the applicant is going to spend time reflecting on the proposed project, and rather than it being just an experience'. This implies that the applicant has:
- a clear idea of the purpose of the study visit;
- thought out the questions which the visit seeks to answer;
- thought out how to use the information gained for the benefit of the wider church;
- The Committee will use its own judgement as to the likelihood of the objectives in the previous section being achieved as a result of the study visit proposal, but will take into account any supporting letters produced.
- The Committee will be predisposed to favour chiefly:
- those for whom this is the first such project, and who have had little or limited previous opportunity to observe Christian work (or its context) whether in this country or overseas;
- those who plan to stay in one locus and learn in depth, or who are attending a well-authenticated project.
- Areas of study which are designed to widen horizons personally but particularly between traditions within the church and between churches.
- Visits which include areas of study which have the potential for enabling the applicant to develop further his or her vocation in God's mission to the world.
- The Committee will thus be looking first and foremost for evidence that the applicant is going to spend time reflecting on the proposed project, and rather than it being just an experience'. This implies that the applicant has:
Negative Criteria
Proposals which appear to the Committee to fall into the following categories
are unlikely to be looked upon favourably, unless there is strong supporting
evidence to suggest that an exception should be made:
- Overseas visits which appear to
be chiefly for long and faithful service.
- Visits on behalf of a Diocese to its Companion Diocese overseas (this should be primarily the responsibility of the Diocese itself).
- The necessary costs of fees or other expenses of any degree course or other study courses.
- Visits on behalf of a Diocese to its Companion Diocese overseas (this should be primarily the responsibility of the Diocese itself).
Special Criteria for Young People
The Committee will look favourably at those at the beginning of their ministry
for whom an overseas visit is an integral part of their training for some form
of Christian service or a particularly important part of their preparation for
such service.

At St Deiniols Library we are committed to providing a first rate resource for clergy. We have been able to keep the current low residential rates in 2001, making it excellent value for clergy & theologians who would like to come for a few -days' private study or even a well-deserved break.
St Deiniols was founded over a hundred years ago by William Ewart Gladstone, the Victorian Prime Minister, for the "pursuit of divine learning'. It contains a fine up-to-date working library (250,000 volumes) with comfortable residential facilities in delightful surroundings. We specialise in Theology and History but also have excellent collections of Philosophy, Classics and Literature.
It is the ideal place to spend a sabbatical, catch up on your reading, attend a course, spend a few days on holiday in Wales. It's a good place to study, but also to relax and enjoy the country house ambience. It is close to some of Britain's most breathtaking countryside and ancient monuments - the National Park of Snowdonia 2 the Roman city of Chester, the castles and beautiful gardens of Wales.

OVERSEAS LINK
Email:Fiona Brampton
Here are some suggestions for those interested in overseas links
We have links already through the link with the North
Elbe, through the link with Vellore, and through the Mothers
Union. It might be wise to develop a link through these, rather than setting
up an entirely separate one. One reason for this is that it roots the link firmly
in the life of both this and the overseas diocese.
A group of nine people has just returned from the diocese of Vellore. Why not
invite some of them to a service or meeting to share what they have learned
about that particular part of the world church, and in what ways they think
it has/ will enrich their lives? Some of them will also be leading a workshop
at the Lay Odyssey.
I'm also both willing and happy to come to PCC or other groupings to talk about
world church links (not just Vellore) and help people think through what they
are looking for in such a link.
Partnership for World Mission is in the process of revising guidelines
for overseas links, and any parish embarking on links would be well advised
to follow these. They are drawn from experience of good and bad in links.

National Gallery
Trafalgar Square London
A very interesting article in the Mothers Union "Home & Family" magazine introduces Neil MacGregor, Director of the National Gallery.
"The pictures from "Seeing Salvation" are in the collection and on public display. A permanent free sound guide, 'The Life of Christ' is available to visitors."
"We'd like to follow the exhibition with something that is not so much an event as a habit: we hope to have more lectures, more discussions, and to encourage more use by Churches of the images in their local collections- more preaching from images. Preaching from postcards is increasingly popular, and it's extraordinarily powerful because everybody can have their own illustration to take home. What we would like to see as the sequel is really trying to build a habit of using pictures in talking of God."
A visit to the National Gallery to explore these opportunities might well be seen as fundable under the Ministry as Partnership initiative, as a training day for the Deanery Chapter with Readers or an ecumenical group.

Hengrave Hall, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP28 6LZ
Hengrave
Hall is a beautiful Tudor house set in its own extensive grounds. Within these
grounds stands the mediaeval Church of Reconciliation which the Community uses
for its daily prayer. There is also a smaller oratory in the House with original
16th century Flemish glass.
The Hengrave Community is an ecumenical foundation, comprising men and women, young and old, lay, Religious and ordained as well as a number of young volunteers from overseas (mostly central Europe). All gifts and talents are valued equally.
The Community lives together, exploring its ecumenical vocation. Together, members run the Hall as a conference and retreat centre, seeking to promote reconciliation - between churches, and more widely.

In October 1963 Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant observers at the Second Vatican Council shared with Pope Paul VI the dream of an international ecumenical institute for theological research and pastoral studies. After his 1964 pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the Vatican purchased Tantur (Arabic for "hilltop"), then leased it to the University of Notre Dame (USA) for fifty years. With the guidance of an International Ecumenical Advisory Board, the University built the beautiful and spacious Institute that opened in 1971. The Board has continued to set up the programs, seek out faculty and staff, and administer the property. Under the guidance of both Protestant and Roman Catholic rectors, the Institute has welcomed over 3,500 Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican and Roman Catholic participants to its programs. They have come from dozens of countries and all but one of the continents.
Aims
We assist the search for Christian unity and interchurch harmony among diverse
Christian communions. We seek a broader and deeper understanding of each other's
faith and traditions, ethics and social witness, liturgies and pieties.
We explore the relationships between Christians and peoples of other world faiths,
especially Jews and Muslims.
We participate in the search for world peace and justice, through theological study and through exploring human rights and conflict resolution in different religious and social contexts.
