News from the Ministry & Adult Learning Council (MALC)
The MALC Ministerial Review Task Group, chaired by Bishop John, has been working on the revision of the diocesan Ministerial Review Scheme. Although considerable detailed work still has to be done the principles of a revised Scheme and the elements that the Group proposes it should contain are clear at least in outline, subject to discussion with the Bishops Senior Staff.
Principles undergirding the Groups suggestions: for there to be a revised Scheme which:
- gives ministers the opportunity
to identify with a process which assists their review of ministry;
- is based on clearly stated aims
and objectives, with training and ongoing support for those carrying out review
meetings;
- includes stipendiary and self-suporting
clergy, Readers and other lay minsters, embodying a diocesan commitment to
intregation of ministries;
- offers a process through which
objectives can be set and then reflected upon progressively;
- makes an integrating link to the
resources of continuing ministerial education;
- involves parish as well as personal development.
The Group envisages the Scheme offering these opportunities through three elements:
(1) a revised form of the current element of review with a member of the Bishops
Senior Staff, (2) a work review with the assistance of a consultant, and (3)
a parish review with the assistance of a diocesan officer.
By the time Manna is published, early in 2002, the plan is that the plan is
that the work will be moving into the phase of the promotion and implementation
of specific proposals. For more information contact Les Oglesby at diocesan
office.
Les Oglesby, Secretary to MRTG.
The MALC Ministry Strategy Task Group, chaired by Bishop John, is working on major report to help the diocese develop a ministry strategy for the next decade. he Group is currently in a research and consultation phase. By the time Manna is published, early in 2002, many people will have been invited to take part in one of a number of consultations.
We are asking a number of questions:
- What is our vision of the mission
in which God is inviting us to participate in this part of Gods world?
- What forms of ministry do we need
to enable us to respond to our calling faithfully and effectively?
- In particular, how do we make
best use of the forms of authorised ministry currently available to us: authorised
lay workers, Readers, self-supporting clergy, stipendiary clergy?
- And also should we develop any
of the others forms of ministry available to us, such as Lay Pastoral Ministers,
Lay Evangelists, Ordained Local Ministers?
- In the development of effective ministry in the diocese, what should we seek to do about enhancing or developing such areas as, ministry as partnership, leadership in each locality, patterns of worship, communication and vocations?
If you want to take part in this consultation process at this stage, and have
not yet had opportunity to do so, please contact Les Oglesby at Diocesan Office

for further information.

Nearly ninety people attended the first of The Journey Goes On programme days in Wisbech on 17th November. The day, which built on the agenda identified by the Lay Odyssey weekend at Caister, was designed to help people explore what sharing in mission and ministry involves.
During the morning session people worked on aspects of their local community and church, with the emphasis on what could be done better or more creatively. In the afternoon there were eleven workshop discussion groups on aspects of collaboration and teamworking that are becoming increasingly common in the life of the local church,
Throughout the day participants were encouraged to think about and plan for
what action on these matters they might try to take when they returned home.
There will be a leaflet/booklet produced containing the ideas explored on the
day, which will be made available as a resource for similar explorations locally
in the parishes.
The next two days in the programme take place on Saturday 9th February
in Yaxley, on the theme of Developing Faith, when the morning speaker will be
Canon John Young, Diocesan Missioner from York and on Saturday 9th March in
Cambridge, on the theme of Exploring Practical Spirituality, which will be designed
as an all-age event.
Advance booking is essential. Booking forms will be distributed shortly or
can be obtained on request from Les
Oglesby at Diocesan Office

joint training
- to build collegiality.
Please contact Geoff Catchpole,
MALT, CME Officer or Julia
Jones, MALT, Reader Ministry Development Officer.
CME Links
During the past year I have gathered together a number of useful links &
contacts and quite a lot of useful information. On the CME links web page is
a summary of many of these items often with hyperlinks to more detailed sources
on the web.
In the Resources Unit is a filing draw which has the same titles and contains
the full text of course descriptions, catalogues, brochures from Retreat Houses.
The Web page is updated fortnightly and sometimes weekly. If you can find nothing
there give me a ring and see if the grey matter is any more help!
2002-3 and 4!
Im, by the time this is published and read, well into the planning of the 2002-3 programme. However I am open to being helped in this task with ideas and suggestions and offers of help to organize some events.
In 2004 I am offering to lead a group to the Holy Land, local conditions permitting. I went during the intifada last June. This will be most help those who have not been before. For most this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. You may wish to spend your CME grant on it for the next three years. I can arrange this with McCabe, the pilgrimage company with which I trained as a tour leader.

Schools Plus
Education Sunday
27th January 2002 Ely Cathedral
At 2.00pm on Sunday 27th January there will be a grand service in celebration of the life of church schools at Ely Cathedral. An act of all-age worship has been planned which we hope will be high on school participation, and we are scouring the Diocese for volunteers for different activities, from reception aged children to governors, teachers and former pupils.
Bishop Anthony will also be joining us for the service, to share with us his vision for church schools. The service will centre on the three linked themes Who we are, Where we are and Moving On.
The timing of any event on a January Sunday will always be difficult (and the date of Education Sunday is fixed nationally and ecumenically, not by us!) but we shall open up the Cathedral Centre both before and after the service for worshippers who would like to bring picnics, or just get a hot drink before the service.
Further information will be going out through the schools about this event, but through these pages, may we warmly invite you all to come and celebrate with us the ongoing life of our Diocesan Church School Family. Last time we staged this service, three years ago, almost a thousand people from throughout the length and breadth of the Diocese gathered together in the Cathedral, and a high percentage of the church schools were represented by both children and adults can we do even better this year?!
Two Major INSET Opportunities
We are delighted to have two nationally known Religious Education practitioners delivering INSET in the Diocese this year. Both days will be suitable for teachers, clergy, and anyone who assists primary schools with their RE or collective worship provision. (The days will also be suitable for both church and community schools.)
Monday 18th March - Mary Stone will be leading a day on Teaching
about God, Worship and Spirituality in the Primary School. This is
also the title of Marys latest book, and we can look forward to an immensely
practical day looking at what is meant by spiritual; using the arts,
natural sciences and stories to reflect on the spiritual; making the most of
a visit to a place of worship, and ultimately finding out What is God
like?
Mary is also the author of the well known book Dont just do
something, sit there. She is a Quaker, an ex-primary headteacher,
and a part-time lecturer at St Martins College, Lancaster.
Venue: Bishop Woodford Retreat House, Ely.
Thursday 20th June - Margaret Cooling will lead an INSET Day on collective worship. Margaret works from the Stapleford Centre in Nottingham. She is a prolific author with a number of excellent books of collective worship ideas to her credit. Her training days are always crammed full of inspirational, yet practical, ideas and she is much in demand as a speaker. Venue: Ely Cathedral Centre.
Each Day costs £25 (cost including sandwich lunch) and lasts from 10.00
a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Demand for places has already been high, but there are a few
vacancies left on both courses at present. If you are interested in joining
either INSET we advise you to contact us immediately.

RE Liaison Groups
This term most of the RE Groups are looking at a booklet on God, which will cover a wide variety of ideas for teaching about God in the six major religions covered by the Agreed Syllabus (or five and Buddhism, as Buddhism is non-theistic). Some groups will be looking at Prayer in RE and collective worship; the materials from this latter booklet is on the Diocesan Board of Education & Training website at in the Schools section.
This terms meetings are:
Wednesday 30th January St Peters School, Wisbech

Meetings are free and are open to colleagues from both church and community
schools. Sessions start at 4.15pm and last for approximately an hour.
The Diocesan RE Lending Collection is available for borrowing and browsing
from 3.45pm onwards. Teachers requiring resources on particular topics are invited
to contact the Resources Centre,
01353 652725 a few days in advance of the meeting to ensure that the right stock
is brought to the session.
Members of Ely Cathedral Choir
are available to lead an act of collective worship. In case you missed it last
term, a notice went round to let church schools know that the Precentor of Ely
Cathedral, the Revd Nick Woodcock, and members of the Cathedral Choir
could be available to lead collective worship in schools, with the additional
bonus that they could offer singing workshops to schools which are particularly
interested in music. If this interests you, please get in touch with Shirley
Hall, in the first instance, on

Website Update
Section 23 Reports now on site
In the Summer Term of 2001 we carried out a survey of Governing Bodies to see if there was any interest in following up a suggestion which had been made of putting the summaries of Section 23 Reports on the Diocesan Board of Education & Training website.
The answer was an almost unanimous Yes, so you will now find that some of the summaries are online on the Schools pages. We shall update the site as new reports are received from this round of inspections, but, if you are using the site, do remember that some of the reports are now quite elderly, and might not bear any resemblance to the school as it is now!
Governor Training
This academic year we are offering sessions on governing Church Schools as part of the Cambridgeshire County Governor Training Network. The three sessions which will take place in the spring term are:
Governing at a Church of England Primary School. This course will be offered at St Andrews School, Chesterton on Tuesday 12th March (code CE7).

Church Schools on Tuesday 14th May at St Marys School, St Neots
(code DIN3) and Monday 17th June at All Saints School, March (code DIN4).
All sessions begin at 7.00pm and last for two hours.

Godly Play Courses this Spring
Godly Play is a method of telling Bible stories, or presenting parables
or lessons about traditions, using three dimensional materials. It invites listeners
into the stories and encourages them to connect the stories with personal experience.
It is also a non-coercive way to encourage children to move into larger dimensions
of belief and faith, through wondering questions and open-ended response time.
It is an effective way of working with a group of children who have diverse
learning styles. After listening to the story, the children decide for themselves
how to respond: by learning to retell it themselves; through their own research,
using games, puzzles and books: through art.
One of the most significant features of the method is the use of the teaching
environment and a room has been prepared in Cambridge to enable people to experience
this.
All the courses described below are based in this room at Trumpington.
Evening Courses: - A series of 3 evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm
Thursdays 17th, 24th, 31st January

This year the date is Saturday 2nd November and it will be an event with Roly Bain, the clown, who is running a clowning weekend at Bishop Woodford House. Book the date now. More details later.
Child Protection
There are lots of developments at the moment: please take a bit of time to
read this.
The Criminal Records Bureau
This will provide police and other checks on all who apply to work, both as
employees and volunteers, with children and vulnerable adults. Its services
will be available to churches, through a registered body, in our
case this will be the Diocese.
The Bureau is still developing its structures and procedures at present and it is not expected that its services will be available until much later in 2002.
As soon as its service becomes available, the Bishops Office and the Diocesan Child Protection Reference Group will send a pack of comprehensive information and advice to every parish and other organisations (for example the Mothers Union) to whom it is relevant. Until that time we can only provide outline responses to questions as we simply do not have the information ourselves.
At about the same time, the sheets in the Diocesan Child Protection Folder
will be updated please look out for the new material and edit your folders
when you get it!

Gospel Rocky
Gospel Rocky is a professional summer show performed at a number of seaside theatres over the last few summer seasons. It presents the Gospel story in a fun and inclusive way through a character called Gospel Rocky and it has been a great success where it has played. Norwich diocese booked it for theatres in Kings Lynn and Norwich and had an excellent response. Over the coming summer it will have a three week season and then be available on Sunday evenings. If you want to know more, we have a trailer video in the Resources Centre which you are welcome to borrow. More precise dates of shows throughout the country will be available nearer the summer.
The Childrens Society
The Childrens Society is a voluntary society of the Church of England which has worked with children in need for well over a century. Changing social needs have meant that it has constantly had to evaluate and adapt its work to meet the real needs of children through many decades. No time has been more challenging than the last few years, and the society has done pioneering work with children who have run away and are living on the streets of our cities. Much of this work has been costly and the Society now finds itself in a challenging financial position. Many of our parishes have traditionally supported The Childrens Society but at the present time there is a real need for them to be assured of that support and to recruit more help. If you are interested to know more about the Societys work you could visit their website: www.childrenssociety.org.uk and if you are able to find ways of supporting them, you would be contributing to vital support for some of the nations most vulnerable young people.
Look out for . . .
Harry
Potter stuff
By the time you read this you may well have seen the film
and many of
thechildren you know probably will have done. It may be helpful to know of the
material produced by Christian publishers to help us use the enthusiasm for
these phenomenally successful books in the work we do with children, young people
and, yes, adults, in our churches.
A Charmed Life: The Spirituality of Potterworld
By Francis Bridger, (Principal of Trinity College Bristol and author of Children
Finding Faith), published by Darton, Longman and Todd at £8.95
Bridger explores the spiritual and moral content of the Harry Potter books,
explaining why they have been so appealing both to children and adults and that
they promote the all-conquering power of love.
The moral universe of Potterworld is one in which there is real good and real evil. The evil must be fought, the good must be embraced. But, of course, this is as true within characters as between them From it arises the moral lesson that, consciously or not, Rowling gives above all others: that none of us is perfect, and that we all need each other to keep us on the straight and narrow. (p82)
Harry Potter and the Meaning of Life
Philip Plyming, Grove Books Ltd, £2.50
The public imagination has been caught by Harry Potter more quickly and with
wider appeal than perhaps any other set of books before.
But is there a hidden menace behind the magic? Are the stories of a young wizard
appropriate for Christian children?
Concern has been expressed that children could become influenced by the occult.
Or are they really about character, relationships and the choices we make in
life?
It has been generally acknowledged that the books explore themes and questions
that are at the heart of what it is to be human. Revd Philip Plyming looks
at the spirituality of Harry Potter on its own terms, without either demonizing
or
Christianizing
it, and offers a valuable model for missionary engagement with our culture.
Scripture Unions Connect (linking the Word to the world) bible
study series have produced What does the Bible say about
Harry Potter
(I have to say the title did puzzle a seven year old friend who was visiting
me!!)
Four bible studies on magic, adolescence, ambition and good and evil based on
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This is good stuff and it
might be a more comfortable way in for people who would otherwise be wary of
Bible Study. Also available on the web.
Tuesdays Child: A Reader for Christian Educators
Edited by John Sutcliffe and published by Christian Education at £16.25
This is an anthology of the most significant writing about the thinking about children, their spirituality and faith development as it developed through the ten decades of the twentieth century. Valuable for all who are interested in this subject and a must for those who are seriously interested, this is a particular treasure as it has wonderful quotations from books which have been extremely influential but have long been out of print.
The Bible Made Easy: a pop-up, pull-out, interactive bible adventure
By Alan and Linda Parry, published by Hunt and Thorpe at £11.99
This ingenious book will suit a wide range of ages. The pop-up bits are intriguing
for little people but the page division actually demonstrates the nature of
biblical writing. Creation and flood is the first spread, the patriarchs the
second.
The next spread shows Judges and Kings followed by the Prophets with Jonah inside
a huge fish-face which looms out as you turn the page. The exile is explored
through Daniel before we reach Jesus and a story telling star.
Christs teachings lead to the Passion and the final page features the resurrection and its consequence, the early church described in Acts, and Johns writing in Revelation.
This is a must for every church library or childrens corner, every RE resource area and it would make a super present for any Christian family.
Hugs: a special bedtime prayer
By Pennie Kidd and Susan Poole published by Lion at £7.99
A basic prayer book for tiny children written in simple rhyme and focussing on thanksgiving for those around us, for everyday gifts and Gods great love. An excellent baptism present and a good book to have in a toddler or playgroup.
The Lion Bible: everlasting stories
Retold by Lois Rock, illustrated by Christina Balit and published by Lion at
£14.99
There are lots of childrens bibles and each has something distinctive to commend it. This latest contribution to the genre has particularly beautiful illustrations which draw the reader into the text, the expressive faces of the characters providing a rapid clue to the content of the story.
The book is well organised, with a contents page providing clear themes, a particularly valuable tool in helping children to understand the shape of the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament.
The Tale of the Heaven Tree
By Mary Joslin and illustrated by Meilo So, published by Lion at £10.99
A legend about hope, as a seed, planted by a child in a world of destruction and selfishness, grows into a huge tree with branches which reach to Heaven. Lots to talk about amid delicate and sensitive illustrations.
One Foot in the Water: helping children look back to baptism and
forward to Holy Communion
By Geoff Treasure, published by CPAS at £4
A resource to add to the growing collection of useful material for first communion
preparation. 6 modules with choices in each looking at the baptism service,
its symbolism and promises and the Communion Service, its origins and significance.
Designed for 7-10 year olds but flexible enough to use with older people. Available
from CPAS 01926 458400
For the Sake of the Children: the FNF guide to shared parenting
By Sue Secker, Families Need Fathers Publications £7.95
This publication, funded by the Home Office though published independently, has a Foreword by the Deputy Home Secretary Paul Boateng. It provides both factual information and practical advice in an easily readable form and covers many of the difficulties and puzzles faced by parents who are splitting up. This is a growing area of pastoral work which not uncommonly preoccupies many of us. It is easy to get sucked into the frustration of the adults in which the well-being of the children can become submerged. This book provides muchneeded insights into how that an inevitably sad situation can be managed better with improved outcomes for everyone. An important book for the shelf of all who care about childrens lives.
Youth Work
Millennium Volunteers Scheme
The
Millennium Volunteers scheme encourages 16-24 year olds to volunteer their time
for the benefits of others. There is an emphasis on the volunteering being led
by the young people themselves and the specific piece of work being targeted
at/in an area of the community in which the young person lives.
The volunteering could be an extension of existing work that is being carried
out orcould be designed around a particular interest or skill. This could range
from being involved in the planning and running of school events, youth clubs,
church youth events, youth projects, childrens events, summer camps and
holiday clubs.
To gain a millennium volunteers certificate the young person would
be required to complete a total of 100 hours (and for the MV award - 200 hours)
of volunteer work over a minimum period of 1 year.
Whilst this scheme is being co-ordinated by The Boys Brigade, it is open
to all church/school based youth groups and uniformed youth organisations.

Youth Leaders Resources Event

Plans for our youth leaders resources event on Saturday March 2nd 2002 are now well underway.
Publicity material is now at the printers and will be posted to you soon if you are on the diocesan youth mailing list. If you think you may not be on our mailing list yet, and would like details of this event please send your details to me as soon as possible. Dont worry if I find I have your address already -its always worth checking and letting me know the contact point between my office, your young people and your church. This is particularly important if any new youth leaders/workers would like to receive support and information. Further details about the many workshops and resources at the all-day youth leaders resources event will be publicised on our education & training website within the coming weeks. So visit the Youth section from time to time as it is now updated on a regular basis!

One of the most important places for young people to live out their Christian
faith in practice is at school. In order to help them do this more effectively
Scripture Union is planning to launch a new CD-ROM for secondary schools later
in the year. The CD consists of simple guidance on running a school group for
students, Ministers, teachers or volunteers; suggested principals for programming,
and over 250 outlines categorized according to age and church background. There
will, in addition, be an Internet based resource giving seasonal outlines and
ideas with links to other websites and connected resources. Contact Scripture
Union or the youth officer for more details.
